Chapter 19.

It was a standing-room only crowd at the “Second Coming” event. Five hundred and eighty hopeful parishioners, with ailments ranging from mild allergies to paraplegics in wheelchairs, filled the rental hall that had been converted into a makeshift church for the event. Each one had come to the event hoping to be chosen for a healing by Pastor Faith. The seating area was arranged into two main areas, with walking aisles on each side and one down the middle. A raised white- carpeted platform with a small mahogany table flanked by two red velvet-upholstered high-backed chairs with mahogany legs and a microphone stand served as the focal point of the room. On the small mahogany table stood a clear glass of water and the well-worn Bible that Pastor Faith used during the service. On the first of the three steps up to the platform stood Pastor Faith, a microphone in his right hand, and his left on the forehead of a twenty-year-old girl named Emily who had come to the event hoping to get her cystic acne cleared up.

Pastor Faith, dressed in an all-white suit, squeezed the young girl’s forehead slightly as he prayed over her and asked the crowd to hold their hands out in faith that the healing power of Jesus come through them and cure this young girl’s acne and end her social problem. After a moment of silence, Pastor Faith released the girl, who immediately fell in a faint. Two men, ushers who were dressed in black suits and standing at her side during the healing, caught the young girl and dragged her off to the side of the room where a soft light blue shag carpet had been laid and six other unconscious people lay napping. The crowd erupted in applause and screams of ‘Praise Jesus’ filled the hall.

Pastor Faith raised the microphone to his mouth and took a couple of measured deep breaths to regain his strength. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Pastor Faith said, “the power that flows through me will heal that young woman’s horrible debilitating acne in time. We must have faith that everything happens in its own time. And speaking of time, I must take a short break while the usher ministries pass around the collection baskets to receive your offerings.” Pastor Faith put the microphone back on its stand on the raised platform and walked to the back of the platform and through a door that led to his dressing room.

The dressing room was set up simply with a large mirrored dressing table made of redwood. There was a small white vase holding a single red rose and a hairbrush on the table top. In front of the table was a matching redwood chair with a red velvet cushion. Pastor Faith sat in the chair and faced the mirrored table. He plucked the rose from its vase and held it to his nose, inhaling its aroma and then returned it to its vase. He took the brush and considered pulling
